"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
~ Winston Churchill
I am excited to share with you my intentions to run for the Ohio State Senate in the 24th District. I have enjoyed your support and friendship over the years. My desire to return to elected office is fueled by my experience and understanding of how the private-public relationship drives a healthier and sustainable economy.
From 2006-2010, I was honored to serve in the Ohio House of Representatives. I was able to lead an effort to pass a state budget that lowered taxes and reduced the size of state government. While in office, I made strides in the area of tax reform, spearheading a campaign to reduce the kilowatt hour tax and supported limited tax credits that stimulated economic growth.
I also led the effort on the passage of the Great Lakes Compact which serves to protect, promote, and preserve Lake Erie. In 2008, it was an honor to be overwhelmingly elected by my fellow Republican Representatives to chair the House Republican Caucus.
As you may recall, in 2010 I ran in the first ever election for Cuyahoga County Executive. I won the 3-person Republican Primary with over 68% of the vote. Despite receiving the endorsement of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the leaders of county reform, and many elected officials and leaders of both parties throughout the county, I came in second in a 6 person race in the general election.
Since 2010, I have continued my work as a law partner at the offices of Thrasher, Dinsmore and Dolan, as well as serving as the Vice President of Seventh Avenue Management. I also thoroughly enjoy the challenge of making the Cleveland Indians a champion on the field, and in the community. Through my work with the Cleveland Indians Charities and the Indians Community Impact program, we hope to have a lasting, positive impact on families throughout Northeastern Ohio.
I have remained active in politics and public service. I served on the Cuyahoga County Republican Party Policy Committee, was named a Rodel Fellow, became a delegate to the 2012 Republican Convention, and volunteered and contributed for many Republican candidates over the past four years.
My service to the community is not limited to politics. I serve on the Board of Trustees of the Cleveland Chapter American Red Cross, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, LifeAct, Rio Grande University, and the Cleveland State University Foundation Board. I am also a member of the Cleveland Council of World Affairs and the Cleveland City Club.
Along with the love, support and advice of my wife Jessica, son Sam, and stepson Maddox, these experiences have helped shape my views on how to move Ohio forward.
Under the leadership of Governor John Kasich and State Senator Tom Patton, Ohio has made great progress. I am sure both will agree that work still remains to keep Ohio on the right track and our economy growing. I will maintain my efforts on tax reform, workforce development, and job growth and retention. I will relentlessly work on streamlining government so obtaining permits, licenses, and engaging in the workers compensation system is more efficient and effective.
I enjoy a reputation of someone who can work with both sides of the aisle without sacrificing my principles. I believe in a smaller government that promotes economic growth led by the private sector, protects and promotes Ohio's natural resources, and supports individual freedoms and the sanctity of life.
I look forward to working with you during my campaign and for you as a State Senator.
